Gary came to our facility to conduct a leadership and personal growth seminar for a group of twelve men in our addiction recovery center. In one eight-hour session, he made a greater impact on the attendees and moved them forward more quickly than we typically see in several months of counseling. Our patients, due to the challenges they've faced in their lives and the issues they are currently dealing with, are quite distrustful of anyone they encounter. That was not the case with Gary. He established trust quickly.
Gary speaks truth and teaches people how to take ownership of their life. He let our guys know that they were the reason why they were stuck, and it wasn't anyone else’s fault. It was time to put their victim mentality behind them. Those new perspectives alone gave them the power to take control of their own lives and recover. Another surprise came a few days after the seminar.
Although we are a Christian-based organization, we struggle to get our patients to church, which we have learned is a valuable part of the recovery journey. A few days later, 11 of the 12 men who attended Gary’s seminar asked if they could attend the church that sponsored Gary to come in. They are now regularly attending that same church. Unbelievable! This group of men is accelerating forward through recovery like never before. It’s amazing what has happened since their time with Gary. I’m a believer!

I met Gary in line at a coffee shop. I didn’t know how serendipitous that moment would be. He’s a friendly guy, and he was making everybody in line laugh. We chatted for a while, got our drinks, and then, in one of the most impulsive moments of my life, I invited him to sit down and talk. It’s hard to describe, but his aura radiates calmness and trust without judgment. Since I felt I was in a safe place, I felt compelled to share my story; it’s a rough one and very difficult to talk about, but that morning, I felt free to breathe. He listened intently and offered to help me. It was as if, in my moment of deepest despair, and drowning in a turbulent sea, he reached down and pulled me into his boat.
First, he asked that I read his book to make sure I knew what I was getting into. I was blown away at how much simple life-changing wisdom jumped from the pages. I read the book in one day. The book was so good that I bought several copies for some of my friends. Then I got that same group of fellow degenerates together, and we hired him as our coach. Over the next six months, our lives underwent a radical transformation for the better.
His transformational approach of helping others forever changed our lives. He saved us all from drowning! The most impactful takeaway for me was that if I continued to have enough courage, to be honest and transparent with myself, instead of life’s challenges destroying me as they had in the past, I could now come out of the other side of those same challenges a better, stronger, and more authentic version of myself.
